If you remember, I'm the Australian you meet sitting at the back of NOPA conference in Chicago in early 80s. That meeting inspired me to build Organised Solutions, which develops sales, teams & leaders in IT&T throughout Asia Pacific.

Was that the one at the Hyatt downtown? I spoke to a breakout session about The Business of Selling. We had about 500 people in that session and I remember that I was surprised that I wasn't speaking to the main group. Still it went very well. Man, your memory is amazing.

Thanks for sharing your comments. Great to see you there, Jim! I too was at the convention (I am originally from NY/NJ so that added to the fun), and it most certainly did ROCK! I totally got a kick out of everyone dressing up like rock stars for opening session and everyone who presented was a true star for the valuable info that they shared. The energy was fabulous, the networking (it's like a reunion) was terrific and I totally recommend attending the next NSA event for those who did not make it this year!

Thanks so much for sending this along (not to mention using my name in an article lots of people will read!).

Kaye and I were talking last night--although by national standards I and Happenstance are really small potatoes, I get to live the dream of thousands of people. I get to play with my best friends on stage in front of bunches of people, we get to tour (it's like a vacation that you get paid for!), and occasionally get the rockstar treatment. I've signed autographs (not just the CD, but T-shirts, hats, etc.) as if I were famous, gotten the backstage meal and snacks in the "Green Room", and other things that everyone who ever learned to play a few notes would love to do. Not bad for a smalltown boy from LA (that's lower Arkansas). I love my work, but it will never be as much fun and as rewarding as music is.

I'm sending your blog on to the kids, the Happenstance dudes, etc.

Since 1977 I've worked with hundreds of speakers bureaus and I'm happy to report to our readers that the bureau business is thriving worldwide. It is very difficult to start with speaker’s bureaus unless you are a celebrity speakersand your fees are substantial. You must remember they get paid on straight commission and the higher your fee, the more they make the more they get.

Regarding your "Lighten Up" tip, I remember when twenty leading administrators of a medical center came together to discuss the upcoming budget. As VP for Advancement, I was one of those who would make a "pitch" for my departmental budget needs.

When the CEO walked in, he displayed a big smile, then distributed large towels to everyone. "Here are your crying towels," he said. "I'm sure you're going to need them."

His levity prompted laughter, bringing a welcome relief to the tension we were all feeling.

You are right--meetings don't necessarily have to be boring. "Lighten Up" gets attendees in a better frame of mind, for sure.
